Hi Readers, it’s Dorca.

I’m here to share with you my thoughts, tips, and strategies on READING. I love teaching reading and talking about ways to support our youth to become life long readers. I can’t wait to hear from you and answer your questions!

What is an Reading Intervention Teacher?

A Reading Intervention Teacher is a teacher that provides extra support to struggling readers. These teachers work with small groups of students who are at about the same reading level. In these small groups, the teacher provides targeted instruction to remediate the reading challenges readers face.

What are two of the most challenging problems you face in the public school system in regards to assisting children with their reading skills?

There are many challenges in the public school system in regards to assisting children with their reading. One of the biggest challenges is meeting the needs of ALL students. Often times there are so many students who would benefit from small group instruction with an Interventionist. However, because of time, resources, and money there is not enough space to give all students the extra support they need. Another challenge teachers often face is ensuring students are reading enough at home. In order for children to be successful readers they must be reading each and every day!

What are three things busy parents can do to help assist their children with their reading skills?

There are many things parents can do to assist their children in reading. The most important thing they can do is READ with their children EVERY day. It doesn’t have to be long, but try to carve out 20-30 minutes each day to read with your child. Like all parents know, children are great imitators. They follow your example, so if you’re a reader and they see you reading, they will be readers. And last, parents please, please talk to your child’s teacher. They know your children as readers and they will have the best tips/strategies you can use with your child.

What is the best environment for children struggling with reading?

See what works best for your child. Try starting out with a quiet, well-lit area. Then add in other things to make a cozy environment where you both can “curl up to a good book.” Be creative and think outside the box (add pillows, soft background music, sit in front of a fire place, etc)

Many parents and children feel frustrated when dealing with a reading disability, what are some ways to cope?

First and foremost, remember you want your child to ENJOY reading and you want them to be life long readers. So make reading FUN! Let them choose books with topics they are interested in (maybe a favorite author? character? subject matter?), switch up who does the reading (you read sometimes, and they read sometimes), act out the stories together, be CREATIVE! Remember, reading should never be a chore or a punishment. It should be a time to relax and ENJOY! Happy reading!
