Hi Readers, it’s Dorca.

While my focus is usually to share my thoughts, tips, and strategies on reading with you all, there are some other subjects that were important to address this week as you and your families tackle the new school year. I can’t wait to hear from you and answer your questions!

What are some ways families can stay organized as they take on the new school year?

It is important for children to have good routines during the school year for completing homework and reading each night. Parents can make a schedule for their children for after school. The schedule can include snack time, homework completion, play, or whatever other activities families want. The key is to make it a routine, so children know what is expected of them each evening. Also, parents can create a dedicated space where homework is completed. Make sure this place is quiet and free of clutter. Having the space and time to complete work each evening, help both parents and children feel successful throughout the school year.

While some children are excited for the new school year, others struggle to adjust. What can parents do to ease the transition from summer break to the first week of school?

As I always say…routines are key ?. Its understandable that some little ones find it a struggle to start the school year. Change is hard for most. Children often need to be aware of what is going on and to know what will happen next. Parents should discuss with their child the changes to their schedule (maybe even posting a schedule up for the child to see). The more solid the routine of school is for children, the happier everyone will be.

Parents can also help their children see the importance of education. Children know to understand the why behind what we ask them to do. If they can understand why going to school is so important, there will be less of a struggle to get them to adjust.

Bullying in schools is very common. What advice can you give to parents and children coping with this?

Bullying is a big problem in schools today and counteracting bullying starts at home. Parents should teach their children how their words and actions affect others. In addition, they should teach them the balance between being confident/assertive and not aggressive or passive. Parents can do role plays at home to teach their children of how they should respond in a bullying situation. And children should ALWAYS feel comfortable to approach an adult (whether a teacher or a parent) about things other kids say or do that made them uncomfortable. Both teachers and parents can also teach children how to deal with bullying through books and videos.

For the teachers out there, the first week back can be particularly challenging between getting to know new students and their personalities, working with concerned parents, and prepping lesson plans. What encouragement can you give to teachers as they go into the new school year?

The start of a school year always seems like an uphill journey for teachers. There are so many things teachers need to be able to juggle in the first few weeks and months of the year. However, keeping in mind the growth our students will make because of all of our hard work now can keep us going. Like I tell the teachers I work with… it’s ok to take it slow. Don’t expect your students to master every procedure, objective or activity in day one. Remembering the 4 C’s always help me…be CLEAR, CONSISTENT, CALM and establish a COMMUNITY. We have 10 whole months with these kiddos; we’ll get there!
