When Crackers Become A Food Group

Writer's picture: DanielleDanielle

During a quick lunch break at playgroup a mom mentioned how great it was that the little one in my care had such a diverse palette. Her son wouldn’t touch anything that didn’t resemble a hotdog or Ritz cracker so she was curious as to what I was doing differently.

For me, it was simply exposure to everything that wouldn’t cause an obvious health concern at an early age. The minute my charge could sit up on her own and her pediatrician and parents okayed the introduction of foods, we all made a concerted effort to give her a variety of foods (taking the necessary precautions regarding allergies) whether it was something we all enjoyed eating or not. For example, the sight of cottage cheese grosses me out a little, but I fed it to the baby anyway and she loves it!

Note that some foods take up to 10 tries before your child gets used to the texture and new taste, so if a food is rejected try again another day!

What new foods are you trying with your baby?
